Catching Mer-Dreams

"Dreams Come True" Blessing 

This sea-nymph of Hawaii's Island of Kaua'i, Noekaia, dreams away the day, splashing in the waves and catching the tiny stars of Kalani's (the heavens') dust between her dancing fingers, as seeds of dreams yet to come. She is one of the many neighboring “sea-stars” (sea- sisters) to legendary mermaid Lehua, who resides deep in the waters of Poliolehua, at the Waimea river mouth of the same island. The gentle rains of eternal spring immerse her in life-giving, crystalline waters, as they reflect her spirit of contentment and quiet play. She delights in the graceful movements of the ancient Hawaiian dance, the hula, dreaming awake the consciousness of oli, joyful song, through her hands and heart:

Halau Hanalei i ka nini a ka ua

Kumano ke po’o-wai a ka liko
Naha ka opi-wai a Wai-aloha

O ke kahi koe a hiki i Wai-oli.

(Hanalei is a temple for the dance in the pouring rain      

The stream-head is turned from its bed of fresh green

Broken the dam that pent the water of love—

Naught now to hinder its rush to the vale of delight.)
